New Fantom Radar from Garmin

GMR™ Fantom 18

18-inch Dome Radar with MotionScope™ Technology

  • 18-inch, 40 W solid-state, dome radar
  • MotionScope™ technology uses the Doppler effect to detect and highlight targets moving toward you or away in different colors to help avoid collisions, find flocks of birds, and track weather
  • Pulse Compression technology provides high resolution while maximizing energy, to enhance detection and identification of targets
  • Target Size allows you to adjust the size of objects on the radar image
  • 20 foot to 48 nautical mile detection range

The 18-inch, 40 W solid-state Garmin GMR Fantom 18 dome radar features MotionScope technology, which uses the Doppler effect to detect and highlight moving targets to help you avoid potential collisions. Fully integrates with select Garmin chartplotters.

High-power 40 W Radar with 5.2 Degree Beam

You get excellent close- and long-range target detection ranging from as close as 20 feet to 48 nautical miles, even in fog or rain. Its 5.2 degree horizontal beamwidth provides a high resolution image and high antenna gain so it can pick out targets at a distance. The result is this radar paints a clear, concise image of the shoreline, other vessels and impending weather — right on your Garmin chartplotter. You get consistent target positions, excellent target separation and reliable operation. Its 8-bit true color imagery also helps you discriminate large targets from small ones and enhances target separation. Radar data is overlaid onto charts (autopilot or heading sensor recommended). Low power consumption, instant turn on and no delay from warming up as with magnetron radars. Rotation speeds of 24 for reduced power consumption and 48 rpm to provide fast screen updates.

MotionScope Doppler Technology

GMR Fantom radars use the Doppler effect to detect and highlight moving targets to help you avoid potential collisions, find flocks of birds and track weather formations. The Doppler effect is the frequency shift in the radar echo due to the relative motion of the target. This allows for instant detection of any targets moving toward or away from the radar. MotionScope highlights the moving targets in different colors on the radar display so you can navigate around other boats or severe weather, or toward fishing spots where birds are feeding at the surface.

Target Size

Allows you to adjust the size of objects on the radar image.

Auto Bird Gain

Fishermen know, when you find birds at the water’s surface, you’ll also find fish. To further improve your fishing experience, use Auto Bird Gain, which helps to locate flocks of birds at the water’s surface where baitfish are also likely to be found.

Echo Trails

A fading “trail” is left on the screen to help you quickly and easily identify moving targets and potential collision threats. Trails are corrected for your boat’s rotation when an autopilot or heading sensor is connected to your Garmin network.

Dual Range

Single radar antenna is capable of providing split screen images on your chartplotter side-by-side, with independent range setting and controls for both close and long range.

Dual Radar Support

Provides redundancy and the ability for each display unit on the boat to select data from 1 of 2 different radar sources.

Dynamic Auto Gain

Dynamic Auto Gain automatically adjusts to your surroundings for optimal performance in all conditions.

Dynamic Sea Filter

Dynamic Sea Filter automatically adjusts gain to changing sea conditions with user options for low, medium or high filtering.

Radar Overlay

Overlays the radar image on the chartplotter’s map page. An autopilot or heading sensor is recommended for best results.

MARPA Target Tracking

Mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA) tracks up to 10 selected targets, helping you keep track of other vessels and avoid collisions.

Guard Zone

Set the safety zone and receive an alarm when an object enters the zone.

VRM and EBL

Variable range markers (VRM) and electronic bearing lines (EBL) allow rapid measurements of distance and bearing to vessels and land.

It’s Your Time

All Garmin radars are designed to be easy to install and easy to use. There are no complex user settings to adjust; just install your radar and start using it. You can rely on the GMR Fantom radar to provide reliable, optimum performance in all conditions. Because, it’s your time.

Simrad NSS NEW LOWER PRICES!

Simrad has just dropped the price of all their NSS touch screen units. In addition to that there are also mail in rebates on them from Simrad in the range of $150-200 depending on the model which are on until April 6th 2014.

If you haven’t had a chance to take a look at these units you owe it to yourself to check them out. Many people don’t know that Navico who owns Lowrance also own Simrad so all the features like Broadband Sounder, StructureScan, SonicHub, etc are available on the Simrad units. The autopilot integration on the Simrad is second to none so for serious trollers these units are the ones to look at. My favorite feature of the NSS units is the roto knob on the keypad which lets you move through the menu and make selections extremely quick if you choose not to use the touch screen.

Take a look at the current pricing on our website http://radioworld.ca/marine-chartplotters-sounders-c-4_95.html?filter_id=183 and remember the Mail in Rebates are on top of this.

Humminbird 360 First Hand Experience

radioworld shirtI was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get a day on the water with our Humminbird rep John Noel this past week to learn about their 360 Imaging sonar.  My initial impression of the 360 (before I got on the water with one) was it is pricey and too large for most people to even consider.  A $2000+ transducer that is almost the size of a 6’ Talon was just too much for me to get over.  My opinion completely changed after seeing it in use and how practical a tool it truly is and it WILL help you catch more fish.

Humminbird and Minn Kota have done an awesome job at designing their new Talon/360 brackets.  John’s boat had a dual 8’ Talon setup and on the starboard side the 360 adapter bracket was mounted there.  With all this mounted to the transom there is no question it is busy looking.  However, with all the benefits of this technology that outweighs the downside in my mind.

S00004John had the Lakemaster Chart loaded in his 998c SI unit and we navigated to our first fishing spot a mile or so offshore.  Once we arrived we deployed the 360 through the menu in the 998 and began to see exactly how the rock piles on the shoal laid out.  The boat was equipped with a Minn Kota Terrova with iPilot Link which makes navigating while fishing extremely easy.  Through the remote control we had full access to the list of waypoints in the 1198c SI mounted on the bow.  At a low trolling speed we used the iPilot Link to take us from waypoint to waypoint (which were rock piles on the shoal).

I caught a couple of small fish dragging a tube behind the boat and one that I marked on the sonar.  John was fishing for bigger bites with a jigging spoon but didn’t have any luck.  My eyes were opened to the effectiveness of the 360 when I noticed something off to the side of the boat as we were slowly moving to our next waypoint.  I picked up a drop shot with a Jackall Cross Tail tied on and cast in the direction of a rock pile we didn’t have a waypoint on.  After my weight hit the bottom I felt rocks and after dragging it a few feet I got a solid hit.  The fish ended up being a 3 1/2 pounder that I never would have caught without the 360 revealing that structure in perfect detail to me.  I was able to repeat that a few more times throughout the day.

S00003

On the 360 there are range rings that show you the distance away from the center (the boats location) so it’s easy to gauge how far you need to cast to reach a target.  When you purchase the 360, Humminbird includes a GPS antenna that has a built in compass heading sensor.  This is what lines up your 360 imaging with the direction of your boat.  When something shows up on the screen to your left it’s actually to the left of the boat so you know right where to cast.

One other thing I noticed about the 360 is that when the boat was stationary the image was much more defined.  This is because the transducer rotates which creates the movement you need for high detail images.  Just like with side imaging your boat needs movement for the best detail.

If you ever get a chance to see a 360 in action it won’t take long before you too are convinced of the value of having this on your boat.  All it took for me was one fish.

Humminbird 360° Imaging

We are now taking pre-orders for Humminbird’s newest product the 360° Imaging which will begin shipping in mid September.

The Humminbird 360 looks similar to a radar display as it scans 360° around your boat in high detail imaging sonar.  You’ll see a 300′ diameter up around your boat with a single sweep of the transducer.  That’s a total of 70,685 square feet of coverage!

This add on transducer works along with your existing side imaging transducer and is compatible with the 798, 898, 998, and 1198 units.

Toronto Boat Show 2012 is a wrap!

Special “Thanks” to two great ladies for making this years event the “BIGGEST and BEST” Boat Show ever for Radioworld.  First and foremost,  hats off to Show Director Linda Waddell and her entire Team. Every facet from sign up through move-in, advertisings, overall look and feel and teardown went off without a hitch and the show and its people were firing on all cylinders. Crowds were spread out throughout the week and both weekends with thanks to that other special lady in our lives “Mother Nature”!
The Radioworld booth was our biggest and best yet, jammed pack with the best electronics money can buy!  Garmin Marine systems were a big hit this year with the re-emerging power boat crowd with many happy customers purchasing full blown, chartplotter/sounder/radar systems in screen sizes from 7″ to 15″. Garmin handheld products were also a hot purchase this year too!

Marine Electronics in general were definitely a key component to this years event with many consumers taking considerable time in identifying their needs and allowing our Marine Electronics Experts fit their needs best.  Simrad, Lowrance, Humminbird, Furuno and Standard Horizon Chartplotters and Sounders along with NMEA 2000 products including wind sensors, tank level monitors, fuel probes and engine monitoring systems sold like never before.

Our lost leader (Revere auto and manual inflation PFD’s) were also a big hit this weekend with 644 pieces sold over the 9 day event!  (Our friends at the OPP will be glad to know that people are safety conscious)

Thanks again to The Toronto Boat Show Team, to a great staff for their tremendous effort over the past two weeks (in the store and at the show), to our vendors and ProStaff for their support and to those many customers that chose to spend their hard earned dollars at Radioworld.

Sincerely

Jack Summers
General Manager
