Navionics SonarCharts Keep Getting Better

Screenshot_2015-01-26-10-58-27In the Navionics Boating app the SonarPhone feature allows you to have a fishfinder on your screen and create your own personal HD bathymetry map with SonarCharts Live!

The fishfinder feature enables you to view live sonar and Navionics charts, both full screen and split screen, within the same app from your kayak, runabout, or any fishing boat! Every time you connect, future SonarCharts can be enhanced with depth data from anywhere you go.

Even better, SonarCharts Live allows you to create a new personal HD bathymetry map that displays on your device in real-time while navigating. The new chart appears as an additional layer over either Nautical Charts or SonarCharts. Data is saved for individual use and can be shared with Navionics to improve SonarCharts.

What you need

To enjoy the fishfinder feature, you need the latest version of the Navionics Boating app on your Android or Apple Tablet or Smartphone and the SonarPhone T-BOX hardware which is available for purchase here.

To create maps with SonarCharts Live in the free app version, you need to make sure you purchase a Navionics+ package from Menu > Charts & Upgrades. If you have a paid version, you don’t need anything else.

Getting Started                                                                                                                            SonarPhone T-BOX

– Install the SonarPhone T-BOX device on your boat. Turn on the SonarPhone T-BOX.

– From your mobile, connect to the Wi-Fi network: Settings>Wi-Fi ON and select the “T-BOX” Network. When prompted, enter the Wi-Fi password provided to join. See the video.

– Open the Navionics Boating app. The fishfinder display will automatically appear along with SonarCharts Live creating your new personal HD bathymetry map!

With the powerful SP200 T-BOX system, you can reach depths of 240 feet with a 200kHz, Dual-Beam (20/40 degree) skimmer style transducer and temp sensor. The Skimmer style transducer can be mounted externally on the transom of your boat for high speed use or internally in fiberglass hulls, but you will lose the temp sensor option for in-hull installations.

Also included in the SP200 package is a 12 volt car plug/USB adaptor for powering your tablets or re-charging your phones

Navionics SonarCharts Now Available on Lowrance and Simrad

soanrcharts

Have you owned a Lowrance, Simrad or B&G for some time? If so, you can create greatly enhanced SonarCharts™ of your favorite boating areas with almost no effort at all!

In fact, Lowrance, Simrad and B&G models automatically store sonar data by default during everyday use, so unless you have turned trails off, the whole library of sonar logs recorded since day one may be residing on the plotter’s memory. All you have to do now is export from your chartplotter to your Navionics card and upload to our website. Once sonar logs are saved on a card, it can be plugged into a computer and the data is transferred to Navionics through the internet to generate new SonarCharts™ for you and other boaters after about one week.

Here is how: http://www.navionics.com/en/plotter-tutorial/lowrance. You can print these instructions before you go to your boat or read them on your phone while you are onboard next to your sonar.

Only Navionics accepts sonar logs from all major brands including most models of Humminbird (DAT and GPX on all models, GPX only on ION and Onix), Raymarine (SDF, NMEA, GPX) and Garmin (ADM). Check http://www.navionics.com/en/compatibility. Boaters can choose to share all of their logs at once or they can record and export specific files. Learn more about SonarCharts™ and find tutorials on how to record sonar logs.

On GPS plotters, it’s included with Navionics+, Platinum+, and HotMaps Platinum for compatible plotters. Owners of any Gold, Silver, Marine & Lakes USA, and HotMaps Premium cards can have it with Navionics Updates.

Lowrance Insight Genesis Mapping

Lowrance released its latest mapping program Insight Genesis which allows you the user to create your own maps from sonar logs.  All you have to do is record your sonar data while you are on the water.  Then remove your SD card when you get home and upload the logs with Lowrance’s handy desktop utility.  Within a few minutes you’ll receive an email with a link to your custom map.

Here is a sample of a short sonar log from a couple of years ago that I uploaded yesterday.

Here is the Navionics chart for the same area to show the difference.

Lowrance allows you to view the maps online for free.  A onetime download is $19.95 to use with a HDS Gen2 Touch unit.  The Standard 1 year subscription is $99.95 and that allows maps to be used on 2 HDS Gen2 Touch units and a 4 hour scanning time.  This also allows you to merge maps from different trips for even greater detail.  The Premium subscription is $299.95/year and offers use on 4 HDS Gen2 Touch and bottom hardness, vegetation, weather tools, and other trending features.

Lowrance HDS Gen2 StructureMap

Since Humminbird introduced side imaging sonar to the recreational market back several years ago there haven’t been any major changes to how the technology is display…until now.  Lowrance introduced what they call StructureMap.  This will overlay the side imaging sonar onto the GPS chart screen.

Here are some examples of what you can expect on the water

This is the Atherly Narrows between Lake Couchiching and Simcoe in Orillia, ON.  Notice the accuracy of the Navionics Platinum+ Chart below.  The edge of the boat docks can be clearly seen on the side imaging and line up almost perfectly with the chart.

StructureMap will simplify reading and understanding side imaging sonar as you’ll see structure objects and how they relate to the Navionics chart and your waypoints all on one screen.

HDS Gen2 units are now in stock and on display at Radioworld.

Garmin Fit App and ANT+ adapter

I love all things Apple, and when I found this little add-on from Garmin, I thought it was pretty cool.

Turn your iPhone 4 or 3GS into a personal training tool. Plug in the ANT+ adapter into the bottom of the phone, download the app, connect to your favourite fitness sensors such as the heart rate monitor, cadence sensor or foot pod and get live workout data.

Work Out Smarter. Not Harder.

Garmin Fit lets you make the most of your exercise routine. It puts a wealth
of valuable data right at your fingertips. Using your smartphone’s GPS, the app
tracks your movements and provides you with your current speed, distance
traveled, elapsed time and calories burned. Plus, with the built-in music
features, you can easily select the perfect soundtrack for your workout.

At the completion of your workout, the app automatically uploads your workout
data to the Garmin Connect™ website. There, you can view your route on a map,
easily track your progress, share your workouts with others and much more.

Add Fitness Sensors

The Garmin Fit app was designed to be used with a wide range of wireless
fitness sensors. Easily monitor how hard you’re working with a heart rate
monitor, train indoors with a foot pod, or receive valuable cycling data with a
speed/cadence sensor.

The app can be downloaded from iTunes for 99 cents click here for a direct link.

Order online or give us a call at 416-667-1000 to place your order, these are in stock.
