Wil Seminar

For Immediate Release:                                                                                                                                                                                January 28, 2013

Lake Simcoe: Former Focus on Fishing newspaper columnist for the Georgina Advocate and award winning outdoor writer Wil Wegman will be hosting another ice fishing seminar in the Town of Georgina. He will present  on Thursday February 7th 2013  from 7pm to 9pm at the legendary Briars Resort, 55 Hedge Road, in, Jackson’s Point (www.briars.ca)

Wegman, who won the 2006 Perch Trap Attack on Simcoe was also a member of Team Canada at the World Ice Fishing Championships in 1991 and has had several top ten finishes in the Canadian Ice Fishing Championships. He won the Perchin for MS event with his son Izaak in 2011 and placed 3rd in 2012 when 200 teams competed. He taught ice fishing courses at Seneca College for 20 years and presents his popular ice fishing seminars from Sudbury to Toronto and from St Catharines to Ottawa. His ice fishing articles have been published in Ontario Out of Doors, Outdoor Canada, Real Fishing, In Fisherman, and Just Fishing magazines. Wil writes the Hooked on Fishing column for Lake Simcoe Living Magazine which is available around the lake at many local businesses.

Wegman is excited about returning to Georgina. “Last time we were here in 2011, every seat in the house was filled and we had standing room only. The crowd in Georgina is great – and many are well seasoned veterans just looking for a tip or two to help them ice more fish.”

Wegman’s power point presentation will focus on finesse ice fishing tactics with particular emphasis on how to catch more whitefish, lake trout, yellow perch and northern pike, from Lake Simcoe during the winter. “Lake Simcoe is a huge body of water and receives more fishing pressure than any other inland lake in the province. With all that hard water and all those other ice anglers, it can be a daunting lake to try and figure out. I hope ice anglers walk away from the evening having learned a thing or two to help them understand the lake and its fish a little more,” he said.

With that knowledge and the tips and tricks Wegman will reveal on how to catch those fish … ice anglers of all skill levels are sure to find the evening both entertaining and rewarding. I’m especially happy that Lowrance Electronics and Navionics rep Gerry Heels will accompany me and offer anglers some incredible insight into the sonar units used for ice fishing. He will also provide great tips on how to maximize the performance of these units while using the latest Navionics map chips during the winter”, said Wegman.

An incredible array of draw prizes will be awarded thanks to HT Tackle. Admission is free … however everyone is asked to bring an assortment of non-perishable food items for the local Georgina Food Bank.

Mid December Quinte Walleye Report

Here is a breif report from Captain Michael Weaver on how the Bay of Quinte is fishing right now…

“The water temperature is finally creeping down to the 40°F mark and the walleye are responding well.  The areas around the ferry and Picton Harbor are producing great catches of trophy fish.  The speed for us seems to be 1.7 on the Humminbird GPS.   Renosky baits have been getting them to commit. One day alone we had 12 fish in the boat by 11:30 am.”  -Captain Michael Weaver  (Landshark)

More reports are on there way from Michael.  Nice Fish!

Catching Walleye = Christmas Toys for Kids

Here is a great story from one of our team members Joe Pickstock on how he decided to make a difference this Christmas season by donating $1 per pound of walleye caught to the Belleville Firefighters Toy Drive.  Here is his story…

“I was on the way to the boat to do one of my charters when I thought it would be kinda cool to give to the Belleville Firefighters Childrens Toy Drive. Trying to decide on an amount I thought I’ll let the walleye decide… So I decided that for every pound of walleye caught on my boat between December 1st and December 15th I would donate $1.  I originally posted the info on Facebook and received a lot of positive feedback.  Jack from Radioworld called me to say he really liked the idea and wanted to match my donation!

The month started off kind of slow with only a few fish a day but some we got into some bigger fish and the total started rising. Well, over the last 4 or 5 days the walleye have gotten in the holiday mood with several days with 8 or more fish, this past weekend saw over 200 lbs of walleye and our total now stands at $744.00. When asked about my goal originally I thought if we could hit $500 it would be great!  So to have exceeded that by almost half as much again is simply awesome and fun.”

Great job Joe!  So far the biggest fish of the month is a whopper at 14.28lbs.  If you are interested in a day of fishing with Joe check out his website at http://www.pbandjcharters.com/.

Weekend Outing to “Slam The Lamb”

Organizer of Slam the Lamb, Mike Weaver, with a nice Sheephead

A few months ago Mike Weaver came up with the idea of holding a local fishing tourney for the members of Quintefishing.com as chance to get together and have a great day of sportfishing and fellowship. The event was called “SLAM THE LAMB” and the targeted species for the day was Sheephead (freshwater drum).  It was held on October 22nd and had approximately 50 anglers and a dozen boats participated.

The event, although having limited numbers, was a very hot topic and drew great interest on our forum  (www.quintefishing.com). Everyone seemed to have some interest one way or the other as to who was fishing and of course who won and how everyone made out. The real backdrop was of course we all would be catching walleye while chasing “Sheepies”.

The day started with the first teams arriving at the launch around 6:00 am, a shotgun start was scheduled for 7:30 am. With all boats in the water the day began with everyone watching where each boat was headed. Most anglers made a run to The Reach or The Gap (the part of Bay of Quinte that opens up to Lake Ontario).

The banter over the radio all day was hilarious and info was being passed like wildfire about catching walleye, not much being said on catching our targeted species. The techniques used by the anglers seemed to be all over the map. Speeds were from 1.0 to 2.5, lures used, Reef Runners, Rapala TD 11’s, Deep Diver, Spoons, Worm harnesses, colours didn’t seem a issue as fish were caught on a spectrum of colours.

The weigh-in was scheduled for 3:00 pm and everyone was back on time and the oohing and aahing begins – Who’s got what? How big are they? How many?  A 3 fish limit per boat was the rule for the tourney. The fish are weighed and then a presentation to the top 3 teams and Big Fish award took place. The day was finished over a get together at a local eatery to enjoy some good food, share the days experiences and tell fishing stories past and present. The winning team was “Eye Candy” from Ottawa and their winning fish, plus big fish of the day (pictured right).

A big shout-out also should go out to Scott Walcott and his crew for pulling their lines and going to the rescue of a fellow team which had become stranded. Scott and his team mates lost 2 hours of fishing time to help them and tow them to a local marina and deserve a big thanks!

And last but not least our organizer Mike is well know to most on the board and has been a pain in the butt to some at times lol. But, Peter comes to the rescue to relieve the pain Mike had in his butt during the day’s outing.  On a serious not, Mike Weaver is to be commended for putting all this together, well done! Everyone had a great day.

In retrospect, we all knew that the alternative motivation was to get out enjoy the day, and catch some of the monster walleye that have started to migrate into the bay. Everyone has to come and experience this!

Thanks to Gene Frederick for sending this story over to us.  Sheephead sure are a unique fish to target in a tournament.  Looks like it was a fun day for all involved!
